Songwriting Discovery Workshop, 6-week Series Led by Lorraine Ferro
Has your mind ever wandered in mid-conversation because someone said a line that sounded like a great title for a song? Have you ever heard the water drip from a leaky faucet and wanted to write something to that rhythm?
Just like the corny phrase, “There’s music in the air,” great songs are waiting to be born if we’re willing to listen closely enough. And in order to fine tune a songwriter’s ears, it takes something other than musical skill.
In the Songwriting Discovery Workshop Series the emphasis is on exploring the heart and soul of the great songwriter. If you’ve misunderstood that last sentence, we’re talking about YOUR heart and YOUR soul. No matter whether you’ve been writing songs for ages, or are just beginning, there’s an artist inside you whose expression you haven’t tapped into yet. During each six week series, we will be discussing and applying a multitude of songwriting techniques and exercises that will challenge, stimulate and stretch your creative muscles in a team oriented environment that celebrates your own accomplishments as well as those of your classmates. Weekly assignments will focus on the songs you are creating and how to develop them.
The overall goal in the ongoing songwriting curriculum at Life Center Stage is to present the tools and techniques of professional songwriting while supporting and encouraging the artistic development of each participant in the class. In other words, The Songwriting Discovery Workshop is designed to marry the craft and skills of the master songwriter to each individual artist’s unique story and point of view.
Each three hour class will begin with the introduction of a topic for discussion and in most cases, a class exercise that coincides. Then, in the second half of the class, there will be time for song presentations from the students with honest, productive critique from both peers and the instructor. The quickest road to mastery is not only to receive feedback, but to give feedback to others. Only then do we realize how to improve our own art. Multi-platinum songwriter and recording artist Lorraine Ferro, has spent decades writing, performing and coaching others. As an instructor for The Songwriters Hall of Fame in NYC for over ten years, Lorraine became known for her uncanny knack of pinpointing what’s working and what’s missing in any given song, and how she incorporates the stand she takes for each songwriter’s dream into the critique she gives.
